ABOUT THE WATCH
Portofino Complete Calendar
The day of the week, date, month, and moon phase, all displayed conveniently on the dial: The Portofino Complete Calendar is the first timepiece from IWC to feature the newly developed complete calendar module. This version features an 18-carat 5N gold case with a diameter of 41 millimetres, a silver-plated dial, and gold-plated hands and appliques. A subdial at 6 o’clock displays the date and the month, while the day of the week and the moon phase can be read of in the subdial at 12 o’clock. The calendar module consists of 123 individual part and is mounted on the IWC-manufactured 32150 calibre. Each of its displays is driven by a separate gear train and can be set independently of the others via the crown or using two push-pieces integrated into the side of the case. The complete calendar only needs to be adjusted in months that have less than 31 days. On the last day of the month, the date indicator must be advanced to the position 31 via the crown. Around midnight, all displays will then automatically advance by one day. Elaborately finished with a gold-plated rotor and blued screws, the movement can be admired through the sapphire glass back. This timepiece is fitted with a taupe calfskin strap with a butterfly folding clasp.
Moon phase display | IWC Schaffhausen
The difficulty in displaying the moon phase on the dial of a watch comes from the fact that the moon does not follow a daily rhythm in its orbit around the Earth. A cycle from new moon to new moon – one lunation – does not last 30 days, but exactly 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, and 2.88 seconds. Therefore, a period of 30 days must be slowed down to come as close as possible to one lunar cycle. This is achieved by placing a reduction gear between the day star and the moon phase disc. The key to high precision lies in the number of wheels used, their proportions and the number of teeth they have. IWC’s moon phase displays are calculated to the highest precision and accuracy.
