ABOUT THE WATCH
Portofino Hand-Wound Moon Phase
In 1984, IWC created the Portofino collection. The family was named after the idyllic village on the Italian coast, which became an exclusive holiday destination for the international jet-set during the 1950s and 1960s. Since that day, Portofino watches have successfully combined the ease of the Mediterranean lifestyle with a touch of glamour and elegance. The Portofino Hand-Wound Moon Phase pays homage to the first Portofino from 1984, which also featured a moon phase display. Now, this coveted model is available in 18-carat 5N gold case with a silver-plated dial as well as gold-plated hands and solid gold appliqués for the first time. The exclusive timepiece is powered by the IWC-manufactured hand-wound 59800 calibre, which offers a power reserve of 8 days when fully wound. This simple yet elegant watch is fitted with a hand-painted blue alligator leather strap by the Italian shoe manufacturer Santoni.
Moon phase display | IWC Schaffhausen
The difficulty in displaying the moon phase on the dial of a watch comes from the fact that the moon does not follow a daily rhythm in its orbit around the Earth. A cycle from new moon to new moon – one lunation – does not last 30 days, but exactly 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, and 2.88 seconds. Therefore, a period of 30 days must be slowed down to come as close as possible to one lunar cycle. This is achieved by placing a reduction gear between the day star and the moon phase disc. The key to high precision lies in the number of wheels used, their proportions and the number of teeth they have. IWC’s moon phase displays are calculated to the highest precision and accuracy.
