The Ingenieur Automatic 42 combines the Gérald Genta-derived integrated bracelet design with a full ceramic execution for the first time.
ABOUT THE WATCH
Ingenieur Automatic 42
To achieve a true-to-proportion ceramic translation of the Ingenieur design that is as slim as possible, IWC opted for an innovative multi-part pure ceramic case construction. The case ring, bezel and case back ring are all made of black zirconium oxide ceramic. Even add-on parts like the crown and the crown protection are engineered from this extremely hard and scratch-resistant material. A thin inner titanium ring accommodates the functional screws from the bezel and the case back ring, holds the movement and ensures a high water resistance of 10 bar. This innovative approach enables a ceramic translation that stays perfectly faithful to the original stainless steel Ingenieur design. Connecting to the case via its middle links, the integrated bracelet offers perfect ergonomics. As ceramic is a particularly light material, it is highly comfortable to wear. The black dial features the emblematic “Grid” structure, consisting of small lines and squares. To ensure perfect legibility in all lighting conditions, the black hands and metal markers are filled with Super-LumiNova®. For the Ingenieur Automatic 42, IWC has pushed the boundaries in ceramic finishing with a combination of satin-finishing, sandblasting and polishing. As ceramic ranks among the hardest materials on Earth, this finishing is a complex and time-consuming process that can only be executed using diamond-tipped tools. The watch is powered by the IWC-manufactured 82110 calibre. Its Pellaton winding system efficiently converts movements of the oscillating mass in both directions into energy for the mainspring, building up a power reserve of 60 hours. Components that are subject to high stress are made of virtually wear-free zirconium oxide ceramic. The movement can be observed through the tinted sapphire glass case back.
