The distinction between a good appearance and an exceptional one often hinges on the smallest details. Created in the 1980s and inspired by a Lépine pocket watch, the Portofino is a classic and elegant dress watch that adds a refined touch to any outfit. The collection offers a variety of case sizes, models with and without diamonds, an array of dial colors, and options for both leather straps and metal bracelets.
With their imposing case size of 45 millimeters and their large hand-wound movements featuring an 8-day power reserve, these models pay tribute to the origins of the Portofino.
Since 1984, the changing phases of the moon have regularly graced the dial of the Portofino. Automatic watches featuring this complication are available in various case sizes, material executions, and with or without diamond-set bezels.
The Portofino Automatic Day & Night features a day and night indication at 6 o’clock. Using a rotating disc with a small sun and a moon, this charming display shows whether it is currently day or night.
The Portofino Complete Calendar features the newly developed complete calendar complication. The day of the week, date, month and moon phase are conveniently displayed in two vertically arranged subdials.
With a case diameter of only 40 millimetres, the Portofino Perpetual Calendar is currently the smallest and slimmest perpetual calendar watch across IWC’s collections. This elegant dress watch is available either in 18-carat 5N gold or stainless steel.
With its three-hand layout and discrete date window at 3 o’clock, the Portofino Automatic embodies the essence of understated luxury and timeless elegance. Case diameters of 34, 37 or 40 millimeters ensure a perfect fit on all wrist sizes.
In the early 1980s, watchmaker Kurt Klaus and designer Hanno Burtscher hit upon the idea of converting a Lépine moon phase pocket watch into a large wristwatch. The Portofino Hand-Wound Moon Phase (Ref. 5251), featuring a 46-millimeter case size and the pocket watch caliber 9521, became the leader model of a new family called Portofino.
Portofino Chronograph Quartz
The Portofino Chronograph Quartz (Ref. 3731) marked the first chronograph in the collection. It was powered by the innovative quartz calibre 631, which combined two quartz-controlled stepping motors with a mechanical chronograph and an analogue time and counter module.
Portofino Hand-Wound
IWC Schaffhausen complemented the collection with the Portofino Hand Wound (Ref. 2010). It was powered by the hand-wound calibre H/849, which measured just 1.85 millimeters in height. To this day, the Portofino Hand-Wound remains one of the flattest wristwatches ever made by IWC.
Portofino Automatic
Smaller Portofino models had dominated the 1990s. In response to the growing demand for somewhat larger case sizes, IWC Schaffhausen introduced the Portofino Automatic (Ref. 3533) with a 38-millimeter case diameter in 2004.
Portofino Hand-Wound Eight Days
The Portofino Hand-Wound Eight Days (Ref. 5101) was introduced in 2011 with an impressive case diameter of 45 millimeters. The watch was powered by the newly developed IWC-manufactured 59210 calibre, a hand-wound movement offering a generous power reserve of eight days.

In 2014, IWC Schaffhausen introduced its midsize Portofino collection featuring watches with a case diameter of 37 millimeters. These diverse and colourful models were partially set with diamonds and paired with leather straps in different colours.
Portofino Automatic 34
A comprehensive collection of Portofino watches featuring a 34-millimeter case diameter was presented in 2019. With these refined timepieces, IWC Schaffhausen revisited the successful Portofino ladies’ watches from the 1980s. Select versions of the Portofino Automatic 34 (Ref. 6567) were presented with diamond-set bezels.
Portofino Perpetual Calendar
With the Portofino Perpetual Calendar (Ref. 3444), the iconic perpetual calendar developed by watchmaker Kurt Klaus returned to the collection in 2022. Available in 18-carat 5N gold or stainless steel, it features a case diameter of 40 millimeters, making it the currently smallest and slimmest perpetual calendar from IWC Schaffhausen.
